Accessibility

The Galician Government (Xunta de Galicia) endeavors that the presentation of all the essential contents and functionalities of the website are independent from the physical devices and web browsers used. In order to reach this independence, contents are codified with free use technical standards, accessible for browsers adapted to people with disabilities or sensory, motor or cognitive limitations.

The content is in XHTML format - a hypertext markup language, open standard developed and recommended by the W3C, the Web Consortium.

The elements that make up the content (images, text, structure, links) are written according to the A priority level of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines of the W3C.

Some style sheets (CSS, another W3C standard) are used to assign presentation formats and to distribute the content and links throughout the page.

It is recommended to use the latest versions of browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Netscape Navigator, Opera, Konqueror, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.

The European Union, in the Council resolution of 25 March 2002, encourages all Member States to take into account the necessity of providing accessible digital contents. Following this recommendation, the Law 34/2002 of 11 July, about services of the information society and the electronic commerce, states that public authorities will take the relevant measures to make the information on their respective websites accessible to the elderly and people with disabilities, according to the criteria about content accessibility generally recognized before 31 December 2005.

Consequently, the design of the website of Xunta de Galicia was made taking into account the accessibility recommendations for the first level of priority from the WAI guidelines (Web Accessibility Initiative) of the W3C.
